One more Academic for Peace signatory to the peace declaration has been sentenced to 1 year and 3 months in prison. While the pronouncement of the verdict has been suspended, a verdict of rejection of venue has been given in files of 13 academics.

Trial of academics, who have been charged with "propagandizing for a terrorist organization" for having signed the declaration entitled "We will not be a party to this crime" prepared by the Academics for Peace, continued in İstanbul Çağlayan Courthouse today (April 3).

More than 1,800 academics from around the world, including Noam Chomsky and Judith Butler, have signed an open letter in support of Prof. Füsun Üstel and all other Academics for Peace, facing imprisonment for having signed the peace declaration.

Over 1,800 academics from around the world have made a call for Academics for Peace, who have been dismissed from universities and have been facing imprisonment for having signed the declaration entitled "We will not be a party to this crime."

While one academic has been given a deferred prison sentence of 1 year, 10 months, 15 days, the court has also ruled that the speech of Bese Hozat, whose name is mentioned in the indictment, shall be added to the case file upon the request of the lawyer.

"This report is part of a broader research project currently in progress.* Conducted by the Human Rights Foundation of Turkey (HRFT), the research is meant to explore the recent crackdown on Turkish universities and the destruction of the academic environment. The present report focuses on a special episode of that story, namely, the case of Academics for Peace."
