32 Academics Face up to 7 Years, 6 Months in Prison

The Prosecutor’s Office has announced its opinion as to the accusations regarding 32 academics, who had their hearings at two separate courts, and demanded that the academics be penalized as per the Article no. 7/2 of the Anti-Terror Law.

Trial of academics, who have been charged with "propagandizing for a terrorist organization" for having signed the declaration entitled "We will not be a party to this crime" prepared by the Academics for Peace, continued in İstanbul Çağlayan Courthouse yesterday (October 17).

10 academics have had their hearings at two different courts. The İstanbul 30th Heavy Penal Court has combined the case files of Tuğba Yıldırım and Zeynep Yeşim Gökçe with the case files of other academics tried by the same court.

On 25 September 2018, the hearings of 11 members of Academics for Peace concluded in Istanbul’s various criminal courts. The 28th High Criminal Court sentenced two academics to one year and three months in prison on charges of creating “terrorist propaganda” for having signed the peace petition drafted by Academics for Peace in January 2016. The sentences of two academics were suspended. The cases of the other nine academics remain ongoing.
