Global Levels of Academic Freedom 2019: Status Groups According to Academic Freedom Index (scale 0-1). Countries with "A" rankings have the highest score, and those with E rankings have the lowest. Countries in gray are not rated due to insufficient data.

Developers of new index rating countries by their level of academic freedom are challenging university rankers to consider such freedoms more broadly.

Originating in Wuhan, the capital city of China's Hubei province, in December 2019, novel coronavirus (COVID-19) has taken hold of the whole world. The outbreak reached such an extent that the World Health Organization (WHO) declared the situation that we faced a pandemic on March 11, 2020.

“They took my job, my career and my home from me,” said Serdar Değirmencioğlu, a former head of the psychology department at Istanbul’s Doğuş University. “That wasn’t enough, so they took my wife hostage. But they weren’t able to take my hope for peace and my power to fight back.”

Değirmencioğlu is one of hundreds of academics to have come under pressure from the state since 2016. Many have received prison sentences, or lost their jobs and their reputations – and all for signing a public statement calling for peace.

Academic for Peace Assoc. Prof. Tuna Altınel from Lyon-1 University of France has been acquitted of "membership of a terrorist organization".

Having his third and final hearing at the Balıkesir 2nd Heavy Penal Court today (January 24), Altınel has been acquitted.

The court of appeal has overturned a prison sentence given to Prof. Dr. Nesrin Sungur-Çakmak, one of the academics who have been charged with "propagandizing for a terrorist organization" for having signed the declaration entitled "We will not be a party to this crime."
