Meriç Eyüboğlu: Though Academics for Peace Tried Separately, One Decision Will Affect the Whole Case

The hearings of the academics who put forth the claim to Peace start on December 5, 2017. Meriç Eyüboğlu said that the academics "are tried separately to be isolated".

The academics who signed the Peace Declaration, titled "We Will Not Be A Party To This Crime" have been threatened, targeted, dismissed from office, and subjected to various accusations since January 11, 2016.

Commenting on the hearings starting today by Turkey’s Penal Court against more than a thousand academics, the European Green Party co-chairs Monica Frassoni and Reinhard Bütikofer said:

‘Terrorist Propaganda’ Charge Stifles Free Speech

The decision to prosecute scores of academics for signing a January 2016 petition criticizing the Turkish government’s actions in southeastern Turkey seriously violates the right to free speech and academic freedom, Human Rights Watch said today. The charges are also a misuse of terrorism laws.
