4 Academics Have First Hearings

34th Heavy Penal Court has rejected acquittal, consolidation and citation requests in all four hearings. The court ruled for a written statement to be submitted to the Public Prosecutor’s Office on how the declaration by Academics for Peace was made public.

Trial of Academics for Peace signatories continued today (January 30) at İstanbul Courthouse 32nd Heavy Penal Court. First hearings of 13 academics were held, eight of the 13 academics stood ready in the trial, three of them made their statement of defense.

In 13 hearings, academics’ lawyers demanded that the file of the first suit be asked from 13th Heavy Penal Court, an interpreter be made available and an extension of time.

Hearings about signatories of “We Will not be a Party to This Crime” declaration released by the Academics for Peace continued at 35th Heavy Penal Court at İstanbul Courthouse in Çağlayan.

First hearings of 12 academics from Marmara University, İstanbul Technical University (ITÜ), Yıldız Technical University (YTU) and Özyeğin University were held.

Three academics from İstanbul University charged for having signed the peace declaration, had the first hearing of their trials today. Their next hearing will be on May 8, 2018.

The hearings of the academics, standing trial for having signed the peace declaration "We will not be a party to this crime" , continued today (December 26) before İstanbul 36th Assize Court in three different courtrooms.

According to the indictment prepared by Prosecutor İsmet Bozkurt, the academics are being charged with "Making Propaganda for a Terrorist Organisation", based on the Article 7/2 of the Turkish Anti-Terror Act and Article 53 of the Turkish Penal Code.

The hearings in İstanbul Courthouse 36th Heavy Penal Court started at 9:30 a.m.

According to the indictment prepared by Prosecutor İsmet Bozkurt, the academics are being charged with "Making Propaganda for a Terrorist Organisation", based on the Article 7/2 of the Turkish Anti-Terror Act and Article 53 of the Turkish Penal Code.

47th Hearing Held in Trial of Academics

The first hearing was held for an academic, Melda Tunçay, on the third day of the trial of the peace declaration signatories.

The trial of retired chemistry professor from Marmara University Melda Tunçay was held at the 36th Heavy Penal Court. Tunçay’s colleagues and lawyers attended the hearing.

In his statement of defense, Tunçay said that he signed the declaration with humanitarian considerations. His lawyers demanded his acquittal.
