Academic for Peace Füsun Üstel is Imprisoned

Francophone Professor Füsun Üstel has been imprisoned, as the first academic among 2,212 petitioners who signed the Peace Petition. So far, 610 petitioners are on litigation process before the court and Turkish courts gave a ruling for 186 academics. Thirty-three of those academics received prison sentences.

Sentenced to 1 year and 3 months in prison for having signed the peace declaration, Academic for Peace Prof. Dr. Füsun Üstel has submitted herself to Eskişehir Women’s Closed Prison after her prison sentence has been upheld by the court of appeal.

While one academic has been given a deferred prison sentence of 15 months for “terror propaganda”, another academic has been sentenced to 2 years, 1 month in prison for “aiding a terrorist organization” without deferment of the verdict.
